Michael Schumacher heading to starting grid on 20th anniversary of Formula 1 debut in commemorative gold-plated helmet

• Helmet manufacturer Schuberth presents the most decorated racer of all time with gold-plated helmet in thanks for "20 golden years" • Schuberth donates full-scale gold-plated replica of helmet to "FIA Action for Road Safety" campaign

MAGDEBURG/SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS (26 August 2011). The winningest Formula1 driver of all times, Michael Schumacher (Mercedes GP Petronas), will be celebratingyet another historical first at the Grand Prix of Spa-Francorchamps: Twenty years afterhis debut in the premiere division of his sport, the 42 year old is still racing as an activedriver – an unprecedented show of longevity. His star launched its incredible ascent on25 August 1991. On 28 August 2011 it will truly shine in gold.

That's because prior to the Grand Prix in Belgium, helmet manufacturer Schuberth willpresent 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher with a special helmet tocommemorate the day in grand style – with 21-carat gold plating. It will be the first timethat Michael Schumacher has gone without his familiar, predominantly red helmetdesign, and will only be worn in the anniversary race. Schumacher's customary designelements, including the Chinese dragons, are all in place, just in black. MichaelSchumacher and Schuberth GmbH, a global excellence leader in the development andproduction of head protection technology, have enjoyed a close, successful partnershipsince 2001.

Schuberth will make just twenty gold-plated 1:1 replica helmets with a certificate ofauthenticity signed by Michael Schumacher – one for each of Schumacher's years inF1. There will also be additional replicas with gold paint. The replicas can be ordered inthe Schuberth online shop at

Schuberth will donate one of the 20 gold-plated replicas to the FIA "Action for RoadSafety" campaign. The campaign aims at achieving a significant reduction in thenumber of traffic fatalities worldwide by 2020. This starts with improved accidentprevention measures in developing and emerging countries, where 90 percent of allfatal traffic accidents worldwide occur. Michael Schumacher has been active for anumber of years on behalf of the FIA foundation as an ambassador.

For Michael Schumacher, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is one of his favouriteplaygrounds. He's gathered more wonderful memories there than anywhere else.Located just one hundred kilometres from his home town of Kerpen, the 22-year-oldtook a sensational seventh place finish in Jordan to qualify for his first race, althoughhe ended up quitting the contest early with damage to his clutch. One year later he wonthe F1 event in Belgium. And in 1995 he enjoyed what was perhaps the finest race ofhis career, moving up from a 16th place to take the chequered flag. He won six times inall in Spa. The past 20 years in Formula 1 were truly the "Golden Twenties" for MichaelSchumacher.
